Application: Network management software

LANsurveyor is easy to use, proven network and desktop management software. LANsurveyor is unique because it provides four essential functions in one cost-effective application: automatic network maps, asset management reports, network monitor, and remote administration and distribution. (Neon Software)

Quick start: Today we want to show you, how you can use LANsurveyor for creating a figuratively illustration (map) of your network, in order to use it for dispatching files and messages to your network clients. Beneath the already mentioned capabilities, we also show you how you can query various infos. e.g. about running processes / services from your clients and how we set up a visual connection with the help of Microsoft Remote Desktop.

To use the above capabilities from LANsurveyor, we additional have to install the “Neon Responder Client” tool on our network clients and activate the Remote Desktop. Now it’s time to start the tool. Right from the beginning, we are asked to make some important settings according to our network. Beneath the IP range, we also specify a password, which LANsurveyor is going to use for later communications with our Neon Responder clients. Additional we input the required Community strings for our SNMP capable devices. Afterwards we click the Ok button and observe how LANsurveyor trawl our network for compatible devices. To the end of this process we get an illustration (see Figure 1) of our network.

The rest is explained through the following example. Suppose that all terminals have an unique identification number. We now want to associate this numbers with the particular devices on our map. Therefore we select the Properties option by a Right click on one of our devices and change the Node Name field correlative to the identification number. A few minutes before we finish our phone rings. Hi there is Bob from the sales department.... Ok Bob, please tell me the identification number of your terminal and your problems. A short time later after Bob’s description, we find his terminal in our map.

We first want to obtain further informations about his device. Therefore, we make a Double Click on it. Since we have started the tool for the first time, we are asked if LANsurveyor should transmit our earlier specified password to the Neon Responder clients.
